Rare cigar cabinet, Guillaume Diehl
Being a German by birth (Charles-Guillaume Diehl was born in Steinbach (Grand Duchy of Hesse, July 20, 1811) until 1850 was not listed in the Almanach du Commerce. He moved to Paris. At that moment he settled on the street Michel-le-Comte, 16. He then moved to house number 21 on the same street (1851-1842) and to house number 19 until he died (1853-1885) His workshops were located at 39 rue Saint-Sebastian, where in 1870 he hired six hundred workers.Learning the art of creating objects from precious woods, ivory (which usually included the creation of chessboards, checkers, plaques), he developed his production in the direction of making luxurious furniture, attracting crowds at the World Exhibition.Diel made elegant small pieces of furniture from rosewood and arborvitae in the style of Boulle, but what made him famous were the boxes (decanters, game boxes, gloves, cashmere and jewelry.) Jules Mesnard in 1867 summed up Dill's production beautifully: "His work covers the entire artistic furniture, from a pin box for 2 francs to a large piece of furniture worth 70,000 francs. He has both ordinary, modern furniture and expensive furniture.” (Miracles of the World Exhibition of 1867). Parisian and international clientele enjoyed the copious and tasteful sumptuous pieces he produced, as well as the pleasingly elegant pieces found in "Paris Articles" and French marquetry. His marquetry skills were awarded a silver medal at the 1867 World's Fair in Paris. Outside of this production, he was known for his furniture, tables, cabinet bases, cupboards, often of very high quality, decorated with bronze or paneling or fine marquetry. During the Universal Exhibition of 1878 in Paris, although he received French citizenship of the country in 1872 (remarkable, given that less than two years had passed since Sedan's defeat); Diehl was disqualified from the competition due to his acquired success.
