Antique Daruma sculpture
Antique sculpture "Daruma". Bronze. Japan, XX century
Daruma (Bodaidaruma) is a Japanese abbreviated pronunciation of the name Bodhidharma (? -528), the founder of the Buddhist Zen school. In the year 510, he went to China, where he drove the Shaolin Monastery in the Sunshan Mountains. According to legend, he remained in a meditative state for about 9 years, looking into the wall. He died in 528, passing the sacred teachings to the patriarch of Zen, Khui-ke.
In Japan, the teachings have been known since the 12th century. Since the Muromachi period (1335-1537), Zen Buddhism has gained particular popularity.
