Antique liege style wardrobe
Low antique wardrobe in the Liege style. Oak, carving. Belgium, beginning of the twentieth century.
The wardrobe can be called a worthy representative of the Aachen-Liège style. The frieze in the base and doors are decorated with complex carvings in the form of flowing, delicate floral motifs and curls of leaves. Four doors separated by carved columns and three drawers at the bottom conceal an impressive interior space. Bronze handles and keys are made in the shape of ornate sprouts and shells, which emphasizes the style.
The connection between the upper and lower parts of the cabinet is usually not hidden by anything, but the threads of the top flow freely into its lower continuation. The cabinet features stunning tapered legs and a sophisticated design. The supports themselves are lavishly decorated with carved acanthus leaves and medallions.
The sophisticated Aachen-Liège originated in the free German city of Aachen, which belongs to the Diocese of Liege. The formation of the iconic style occurred at the beginning of the 18th century and absorbed elements of late Baroque and Rococo. Traditionally, oak was used for furniture in the cities of Aachen and Liege. The wood was painted, waxed and sanded. All of these processes were important to protect and preserve the natural structure of the wood.
