Antique tray, Limoges
Haviland & Co. Antique Tray Porcelain, hand-painted, gilding. France, XX century
The history of Limoges porcelain began in 1770, when kaolin deposits, which were necessary for the production of solid material, were discovered near the city of Limoges. Already in 1771, the first Royal Porcelain Manufactory was built, and soon several dozen porcelain factories appeared on the territory of the district.
Initially, the masters copied porcelain from China and Japan, which were popular at that time, but after a while their own French style appeared. Limoges porcelain is characterized by high quality porcelain, translucency and subtlety of the crock, and, of course, skillful hand-painted.
The term "Limoges porcelain" does not apply to any particular producer, so called porcelain produced in factories of this particular area.
