William Hobe moved from France to the United States in the early 20th century. He, as the son of a jeweler, was well versed in the competent combination of textures and halftones. His first work was decorations for the theatrical production of Ziegfield Follies. By the 1930s and 40s, Hobe's company had become one of the leading suppliers of theater and film. Sales of their jewelry increased thanks to connections with Hollywood, as the jewelry was advertised by the leading actresses and models of the time.
