The lily is a traditional ritual plant in Shinto rituals. Not far from the location of the first semi-legendary capital of Japan, Nara, is the ancient cult temple of Isagawa, where the annual Saikusa Matsuri Lily Festival takes place. The delicate white flowers of this plant decorate the offerings of the kami (sacred, mystical) Empress Himetataraisuhime no Mikoto. After the ritual, lily flowers are distributed to the worshippers to protect them from diseases and ailments.
