Solingen is an ancient center of German production of metal objects and weapons. The products of the "City of Knives" were very desirable in the European armies, and at some point the Teutonic Order took the masters of the settlement under its patronage. The families of the craftsmen kept the secrets of producing high-quality products and passed them on only to the worthy ones who passed strict selection. After joining the guild, the master was forbidden to leave the city area, so that the secrets would not be passed on to strangers. However, there is one known case of the escape of gunsmiths who settled in England and started producing their own products.
