Antique tapestry "Forest"
Antique tapestry "Forest". Made of fabric. The tapestry depicts a forest with all its variety of shades, hills are visible in the gaps between the trees. There is a specialized name for tapestry with such a theme - verdure (from the French "verdure" - "greenery", "grass", "foliage"). This term appeared in the 16th century and was initially used to denote the image of vegetation, landscapes, as well as animals and birds against the background of nature. By the end of the 15th century, tapestry with realistic landscapes and still lifes appeared in France, Holland and Flanders, and gradually the term "verdure" began to be used to classify tapestries, highlighting a separate subtype of pile carpet. The first verdures were created at Brussels manufactories. The construction of the landscape in them followed the principles of the backstage landscape in painting: bright and dark tones (green and brown) were used for the foreground, then lighter greens in the middle ground, and pale blue for the background. France, 20th century.
