Antique tapestry "The Hunt of the Guises. March"
Antique tapestry "The Hunt of the Guises. March" (also known as "The Hunt of Maximilian. March"). The tapestry was created based on a drawing by the Dutch artist Joris van Orley. The tapestry is a reproduction of a woven carpet from a series of tapestries with the conventional name "The Hunt of Emperor Maximilian". This tapestry is dedicated to March, the month of the zodiac sign Aries - this is confirmed by the medallion with the symbol of Aries on the top of the tapestry. France, 20th century.
The original tapestry "The Hunt of Emperor Maximilian" dates back to the end of the 16th - beginning of the 17th century, and is kept in the Louvre. The series of original tapestries was probably commissioned by one of the members of the Habsburg family in the Netherlands. Each tapestry represents a certain scene of the royal hunt in the Soignes Forest. It is noteworthy that each work is simultaneously an allegory of one of the twelve months of the year and the signs of the zodiac. Presumably, it was created in a workshop that specialized in decorative fabrics and tapestries commissioned for imperial palaces. The tapestry served not only as a decorative element of the interior, but also as a symbol of the power of the house.
