Antique sketch, Jean Albert Pougny
An antique sketch of a woman's theatrical costume, a long black evening gown with draping, by Ivan Albertovich Pougny (1892-1956), a renowned Russian artist, art critic, and exhibition organizer, a prominent figure in the Russian artistic émigré community. Gouache on paper, signed lower left: Pougny. This work dates from his Berlin period (1921-1924) and is a handwritten work by I.A. Pougny. It is of collector and museum interest.
In 1921, I.A. Pougny and his wife, Ksenia Boguslavskaya, moved from Finland to Berlin and actively participated in the cultural life and theatrical activities of the Russian émigré community: they designed theatrical performances and numbers at the Berlin cabaret "Blue Bird," "Carousel," "Renaissance Theater," and other private theaters, one of which was the site of this work. Each of the created costumes was imbued with symbolism. These works are particularly rare in I.A. Puni's legacy.Top right: the stamp of the Sergei Lifar collection.
