Vintage statuette "A pair of sparrows"
The "Pair of Sparrows" statuette is made of porcelain with underglaze painting. The Goebel manufactory. Germany, XX century.
The Goebel company was founded on January 30, 1871 in Thuringia, a region of Germany that has long been famous for the production of porcelain products. A small town called Oeslau was chosen, located about five miles east of the city of Coburg. The German company was headed by Franz Detleff and his son William Goebel. For a while, father and son made pencils and children's balls, as they did not have the money to produce porcelain. In addition, the obstacle was that the Duke of Coburg was afraid of fires and for this reason refused to allow the production of porcelain in the city.
However, Franz Detleff did not abandon the decision to create a porcelain manufactory. Oeslau, which was then renamed the city of Redental, was indeed a suitable place for the production of decorative products. A sufficient amount of labor was concentrated here, there were clay deposits, and the waters of the Reden River flowed nearby.
