Antique sculpture
Ancient sculpture "Satyr-woman with children." Made of biscuit porcelain. On the pedestal there is the signature of the author of the form Claude Michel (also known as Claudion) - “Clodion 1785”. This work dates from a later period, the date on the figure itself indicates the year of manufacture of the form itself. France, the beginning of the XIX century.
If in the Greek epic satire were only male, then in Roman mythology there appeared satire-women. This image became popular in France in the middle of the XVIII century. Only Claude Michel had about a dozen forms with this theme.
Claude Michel (Claudion) was born into a family of hereditary sculptors. His father was a court sculptor of the Prussian king. Later, Michel studied with his uncle Lambert Sigisbert Adam and the sculptor Jean-Batista Pigalle. Completed his education in Rome. Catherine II wanted to lure a talented sculptor to Russia, but nothing came of it. After returning to Paris, he was elected a member of the Paris Academy of Arts. He was famous for his small plastic, reproduced in porcelain, bronze, terracotta and marble. Works of Claude Michel are in many museums around the world, including the Hermitage.
