Kutani vintage vase
Vintage vase. Made of Kutani porcelain, the body is painted and glazed with craquelure. On the bottom there is a marking - 九谷陶寿, confirming that this vase was made in one of Kutani's workshops. Japan, 1970s.
On the body of the vase there are hieroglyphs that are difficult to make out, the author deliberately used the style of Japanese cursive writing 草書 so: sho, or the so-called "grass writing". The essence of this technique is to turn hieroglyphs into actually a means of stylization or decoration. Such deliberately simplified hieroglyphs of various sizes can only be read by specially trained calligraphers, and native speakers themselves, in the absence of appropriate training, find it difficult to read. There is even a historical anecdote that one of the masters of cursive writing, Wang Xizhi, who wrote the preface in this style for one of the program works “Poems Composed in the Orchid Pavilion” did this after a couple (or not a couple) glasses of wine.
