Large antique tapestry depicting scenes from the everyday life of citizens of the mythical utopian city of Salent. Made of wool. In the lower left corner of the tapestry there is an inscription in French: "The Adventures of Telemachus Rubens". France, 20th century.
"The Adventures of Telemachus" is a novel by the French writer François Fénelon, describing the travels of Telemachus, the son of Odysseus and Penelope. In search of his father, he visits and talks about countries with different forms of government, encounters gods and mythical creatures. The novel raises themes of nature, morality and ethics, politics. In the ninth and tenth books of the novel, Telemachus and his companion Mentor visit the city of Salent, which is a prosperous, peace-loving utopia. According to one legend, the French oppositionist Robespierre once exclaimed "We want to found Salent!"
