Vintage sculpture "Nagaraja"
Vintage sculpture "Nagaraja". Made of metal and bronze. The artist uses gilding to highlight the richly decorated clothing and such animal parts of the deity's body as wings, snake tail and crown. There is a floral design under the base. South-East Asia, late 20th century.
Nagaraja in Sanskrit literally means King of the Nagas - divine half-human, half-snake creatures. There are several famous Naga Lords in Buddhism and Hinduism. In both religions, these creatures are credited with protecting the enlightened Vishnu and Buddha. Judging by the crown in the form of a five-headed snake, this sculpture is dedicated to a Nagaraja named Mukilinda, who sheltered Buddha during his enlightenment from a storm for a whole week.
