Antique sculpture "Phra Pidta"
Antique sculpture "Phra Pidta", or "Buddha Closing His Eyes". Made of bronze. Thailand, early twentieth century.
According to one version, this bodhisattva was one of the most trusted disciples of Buddha Shakyamuni Gautama. Due to his advanced Dharma and respect for the Buddha, he could quickly accumulate wealth whenever he desired. Phrapidta in all his incarnations (including his early lives) was kind, humble and was willing to risk his life to help others. Phra pidta is depicted covering the face or, in general, all open parts of the body. According to one interpretation, this is a “closed” pose - protection from harm and black magic that can penetrate a person through any openings in the body. According to another version, this pose symbolizes the protection of the six roots of sensations in Buddhism: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch and thoughts. It is believed that the image of Phra Pidta protects against the evil eye; sculptures and amulets with Phra Pidta are often given to people whose professions involve high risk. It also warns against risks in business and brings good luck in business.
