Antique wine fountain
Antique fountain for cooling wine. Holland, XIX centuryThis accessory appeared in Europe due to the fact that it was not customary to place ordinary bottles of drinks on the table. It looks like a bouillette, a samovar, but has its own differences. A wine fountain has a cylinder inside into which ice is placed to cool the liquid and, if necessary, to warm up the drink, a hot weight is lowered into it. Wine or another type of alcohol is poured around the cylinder into the free space. The main difference between a wine fountain and a samovar is that the fountain does not have a pipe or vent. In Russia, wine fountains appeared in everyday life in the 18th century, initially imported from Western Europe and then produced in the Russian Empire.Fountains are valuable and many examples are kept in museums and private collections.
