The sacred Mount Fuji has been revered since ancient times by the inhabitants of the island of Hokkaido, the Ainu. It is believed that the mountain connects the earthly and unearthly. The Japanese believed that immortals lived on it. The Japanese call it Fujisan, "sacred". It is a place of pilgrimage, a wonder of nature and a cultural symbol of the Land of the Rising Sun.
