Vintage sculpture "Monkey"
Vintage sculpture "Monkey". Made of ceramic, coated with celadon glaze. Japan, twentieth century.
The monkey plays an important role in Japanese mythology and is often mentioned in folklore. Every sixtieth day of the eastern calendar has traditionally been dedicated to the monkey, which is considered the zodiac animal in the Japanese horoscope. On such days, people did not go to bed and prayed to the monkey god for health and longevity for themselves and their relatives. The image of a monkey is ubiquitous in Eastern art, as an image associated with prosperity, insight and longevity. This sculpture will be an excellent gift for someone who was born in the year of the monkey or collects Japanese ceramics from the “Symbols of the Year” series.
