Vintage lithograph "Battle of the Uji River"
Vintage engraving of "The Battle of the Uji River" by Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Icho-hosai Kuniyasu. The original was published in 1957. The lithography presented on the site was created in the 1980s. The lithograph bears the signature of the head of the Kuniyasu printing workshop. Japan, 1980.
The engraving, created by Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Icho-hosai Kuniyasu, briefly reflects the history of medieval Japan. In them, artists continue the traditions of the “yakusha-e” genre developed by Toikuni and his followers. The figures of warriors are brought to the fore and fill the entire space of the sheet. The composition develops in several planes, diagonally extending into depth. Sharp movements, strong angles, and the confrontation between two forces are conveyed in the drawing with extreme expression.
The characters' faces are also processed in a traditional manner. An angry facial expression with broken eyebrows, lips theatrically twisted in a grimace, a long nose with flared nostrils - all this is connected with the image of a valiant samurai built according to a template.
