Antique tapestry from the Royal Palace
A rare antique tapestry in Oriental style. Excellent condition, good color preservation. It is made of wool, colored fabrics (partially dyed), sequins and appliques. Burma, Southeast Asia, XIX century.
The inscription on the reverse side of the tapestry in most sources translates as: "Embroidered kalaga with applique from Mandalay. The wool kalaga depicts the last Burmese monarch Tibau, his wife Supayalat and two young daughters. Made for the Royal Palace of Mandalay. Kangbaung Dynasty (1752-1885)"
Kalash were tapestries with rich applique and made using various materials and techniques. Literally, the word "kalaga" is translated from Burmese as "curtain".
