One of the largest Dutch tableware manufacturers from the second half of the 19th century until World War II. In 1899, the company, previously known as Petrus Regout, was renamed "Sphinx". (Sphinx). By that time, the company had been using the image of a reclining sphinx as its logo for twenty years. In 1913, the year of the peak of the Maastricht pottery, they employed about 7,000 people. This number represented almost 70% of the total industrial employment in the city.
