Vintage Sumo Plate, Nabeshima
Vintage Sumo Plate. Made of porcelain. There is a mark "忠山", confirming that the vase belongs to Nabeshima products. The dish depicts the legendary sumo wrestler Shiranui Dakuemon, who belonged to the highest division of sumo - makuuchi (at that time this title was not a rank, but a title). Japan, 20th century.
Nabeshima-yaki tableware is an unusually high-quality tableware produced in the Arita area. Initially, this type of tableware was made for the Nabeshima clan to use it for personal needs and as gifts. The decor on the vase corresponds to the Chinese technique of painting porcelain "dukai", this technique, like many other things, was borrowed by Japanese craftsmen from the Chinese.
Typical Nabeshima ware first appeared around 1700 in the Okawachi kilns, where other wares were also being produced at the same time. Production continued until the end of the 19th century, with similar wares being made by descendants of the masters elsewhere.
