Japan, twentieth century.Nabeshima ware (Nabeshima-yaki) is a type of Japanese Arita ware of unusually high quality. Nabeshima is the highest quality Japanese porcelain ware that was made in the feudal Nabeshima Kiln located in today's Saga Prefecture. Nabeshima ware was not a commercial kiln for export or local use, but was produced only under the strict supervision of the Nabeshima family during the Edo period. Production began around 1700 and continued until the end of the 19th century, with similar items being produced by descendants of the craftsmen in other places. Nabeshima stoves also operated in the 20th century; in particular, this incense burner was made in the 1970s and 80s.
