Antique sketch, I.A. Puni "Evening Dress"
An antique sketch of a women's theatrical costume, a long light blue evening dress with white frills, by Ivan Albertovich Pougny (1892-1956), a renowned Russian artist, art critic, and exhibition organizer, and a prominent figure in the Russian artistic émigré community. Gouache on paper, signed lower left: Pougny.This work dates from the Berlin period (1921-1924), is a personal work by I.A. Pougny, and is of collector and museum interest.In 1921, I.A. Puni and his wife, Ksenia Boguslavskaya, moved from Finland to Berlin and actively participated in the cultural life and theatrical activities of the Russian émigré community. They designed theatrical productions and numbers at the Berlin cabaret "Blue Bird," "Carousel," "Renaissance Theater," and other companies, for one of which this work was created. Each of the costumes they created was imbued with symbolic significance. These works are particularly rare in I.A. Puni's legacy.Top right: stamp from the Sergei Lifar collection.
