Antique vase "Phoenixes"
Antique vase "Phoenixes". Made of porcelain. The body of the vase is decorated with an image of a pair of Japanese phoenixes Hoo on a background of peonies. The reverse side of the vase is decorated with sakura and a pair of birds. The warping and the neck are decorated with floral ornaments. The handles are made in the shape of foe dogs. There is a stamp of Kutani workshops. The vase comes complete with a tomobako (storage case). Japan, the second half of the 20th century.
The vase is made in the shape of a "bianhu", this name can be translated as "pilgrim's bottle" or "wine vase". The design of such bottles was brought to China and Japan by Buddhist pilgrims. Such vessels were first made in the Ming era. Vases of this shape are also called "moon flasks".
