Antique sculpture "Niobe"
Antique sculpture "Niobe". It is made of bronze. The base is marble. This statuette is based on the work of the sculptor Francesco da Sant'Agata (worked in the period from 1491 to 1528). Europe, XX century.
The sculpture refers to the myth of Niobe, the daughter of Tantalus, who was punished for her arrogance. As the mother of twelve children, Niobe boasted that she was more fertile than Leto, the divine mother of the twins Artemis and Apollo. In response to this insult, the goddess instructed her children to kill Niobe's unfortunate children with bows and arrows. In this work, the author captures Niobe in a desperate situation, raising her arms to the sky.
