Several legends circulate about the god's origins. But all the different legends share a common theme: he is a very kind, cheerful, and generous person, bestowing his energy upon those around him, which changes everything for the better. A bag is an essential attribute of Hotei. According to one version, the god's bag contains all his most valuable assets—wealth, health, and happiness—which he bestows upon all those around him.
