Vintage orchid vase. Porcelain, glaze, hand-painted on a blue background. Japan, Koransha, 20th century.

There is a mark in the shape of an orchid, attributed to the Koransha and Fukagawa companies. The orchid is one of the four noble flowers in Asian culture. It is a symbol of youthful beauty and masculine nobility.

Fukagawa is a family, a place, and currently a porcelain manufactory in the Arita region. Its history dates back to the 17th century, beginning with Ezaiemon Fukagawa, who took over the family porcelain business in 1856 with his brother, Takeji. In 1875, he founded the Koransha company (which translates as "Fragrant Orchid Company") in Arita. One of the mark/mark variations was a symbol in the form of a stylized orchid.
