A kiseru is a small device with a tobacco bowl; they were popular during the Edo period (17th–19th centuries). Everyone smoked pipes — men, women, and children. Among samurai, kiseru served as a status indicator. Later, people grew so fond of the pipes that special tobacco sets were created.
