Vintage sculpture "Buddha"
Vintage sculpture "Buddha". Made of bronze and decorated with polychrome enamel in the cloisonné technique. Asia, second half of the 20th century.
Buddha Shakyamuni is depicted according to Tibetan canons: on his head there is a triple ushnisha (outwardly looks like Buddha's hairstyle), curls on his hair are identified with the cycle of life's path, elongated earlobes symbolize both his aristocratic origin and wisdom. Buddha sits in the padmasana pose, also known as the "lotus pose": he sits with his legs crossed on a moon disk and a lotus (stylized base of the sculpture), his right hand seems to touch the ground (the "bhumisparsha" mudra gesture), and his left, palm up, is frozen in a gesture of meditation. The clothing deserves special attention - brightly colored turquoise with a multi-colored floral pattern, the decor is made in the labor-intensive cloisonne technique. The cloisonne enamel technique originated in China in the 14th century. Products made in this technique gained unprecedented popularity in the 17th century and were used mainly to decorate imperial palaces and temples. Today, art objects made in the cloisonne enamel technique adorn modern interiors, giving them a bright oriental flavor.
