A rare large vase by Fujii Shumei
A designer vase by Fujii Shumei. Made of porcelain, it is hand-painted. The vase bears the artist's signature—Fujii Shumei (藤井朱明). The vase comes with a tomobako. Japan, 1970s.
Fujii Shumei (藤井朱明) was one of the most iconic Japanese ceramicists of the 20th century. In Japan, it is not customary to name styles after a single person; rather, they were often named after a locale (Kutani village, Satsuma Province). The fact that the Japanese departed from the centuries-old traditions they venerate speaks to the artist's caliber. Vases by Fujii Shumei are offered at major international auctions and are displayed in museums, such as the British Museum in London.
