Vintage Fuji Shumei V ase
"Frost Patterns"
This vintage Shumei Fujii vase is made of porcelain and decorated with underglaze painting and etching, featuring frost patterns on the glass.
Shumei Fujii (藤井朱明) was one of the most iconic Japanese ceramicists of the 20th century. In Japan, it's not common to name styles after a single person; most often, they were named after a locale (Kutani village, Satsuma Province). The fact that the Japanese have departed from the centuries-old traditions they honor speaks volumes about the artist's caliber. Shumei Fujii's vases are featured at major international auctions and are displayed in museums, such as the British Museum in London.
Shumei Fujii was born in Arita in 1945 (according to other sources, in 1936). At the age of 15, he began working as an apprentice in a pottery workshop. In 1964, he first exhibited his work at the Nitten exhibition, where he received his first prize a year later. In 1977, he opened his own kiln in Arita and became a highly successful artist, receiving numerous awards at the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, the Kyushu Yamaguchi Ceramics Exhibition, and the Minister of Education's Award. He is known for his original decorative technique using painted leaves applied to the unglazed surface of porcelain.
