Antique sculpture "Girls with jugs"
Antique sculpture composition "Beautiful young girls with vessels", made for a private collection. Cast iron. France, 20th century.
An unusual and monumental striking work in cast iron, made from the original by the French sculptor Mathurin Moreau, which represents two girls dressed in classical clothes and gracefully supporting with their hands the afmors on their shoulders. The work demonstrates a high level of detail, given the cast iron, including the laurel wreath on the head of the woman, her stunning necklace adorning her neck, and the flower garland, necklace and hair of the other woman. The large size of the sculptures suggests that this work was intended for a garden, estate or park. The original from which these works are cast was also made in cast iron by Mathurin Moreau for the Fonderie du Val d'Osne, foundries. (In the catalog you can find the sculpture together with the number and sheet).
French cast iron sculptures and compositions like this one have historically been favored as street decoration over bronze ones due to their resistance to more extreme weather conditions. Similar statues cast in Val d'Osne can be seen adorning public buildings and parks around the world, particularly in the United States and France.
Founded in 1835 by the inventor of artistic cast iron, Jean Pierre Victor André, the Fonderie du Val d'Osne was known worldwide for its remarkable architectural designs and decorative cast iron works for nearly 150 years. Beginning in 1851, the firm participated in numerous international exhibitions, earning critical acclaim over the years.
