Antique sculpture "Mercury"
Antique sculpture "Mercury". Made of bronze, covered with patina. The pedestal is marble. There are markings on the round base. Europe, XX century.
Mecurius (Hermes) is one of the most recognizable gods of the Roman pantheon. In legends, he appears as a messenger of the gods - his distinctive feature is a winged helmet and winged sandals, allowing him to quickly carry out assignments. This model was cast after the work of the Italian sculptor Giovanni Bologna (Giambologna), the original is kept in the Museum of Florence and is known as “Mercury Setting Out to Execute the Commands of Jupiter”, or “Flying Mercury”. The young man floats, holding the symbol of the heralds, the caduceus, in his hands, and one of his legs rests on a stream of air blown by another divine messenger - Zefr. Such a sculpture will be a symbolic gift for a traveler or a person working in the trade sector.
