Vintage vase Kyo-yaki
Vintage vase. Made of ceramic, decorated with leaf painting. Marked Kyo-Yaki. Japan, 20th century.
Kyo-yaki is a decorated Japanese pottery produced in Kyoto from about the mid-17th century. The development of this type of ware was stimulated by the introduction of enameled porcelain to Kyushu, and soon after Sakaida Kakiemon successfully perfected overglaze enamels in Arita, Nonomura Ninsei also began production in Kyoto. Kyō-yaki contrasted with Arita enamel ware, which was heavily influenced by Chinese designs and produced with an eye to overseas export; Kyoto ware instead is classically Japanese in style, retaining much of the traditional court taste.
