From 1876 to 1881, he studied at the Brussels Academy, where he was strongly influenced by the animal painter Alfred Werve. He is primarily a master of realistic animal painting, but his works also include numerous still lifes. Throughout his career, he used various artist names: Joos Klaas, M. Klaas, Joseph Klaas, E. Meylat Joors, V. Marinus, and J. Remis.
