Antique Wakizashi sword
This antique vikizashi sword/dagger is crafted entirely from bone and decorated with scrimshow carving. The tsuba is a maru-gata shape with a round outline, and the handle and scabbard are decorated with traditional Japanese motifs (seigasaiha, tatewaki, shippo, etc.). Despite the material, the shape resembles a classic vikizashi—a traditional long, pointed blade with a smooth cut. Such blades were popular in Japan during the Edo period. Crafting a blade entirely from bone demonstrates the craftsman's skill and Japanese aesthetics, and can be added to a collection of rare items. Japan, Taisho period, 1912-1926.
Vikizashi are a class of traditional Japanese fighting swords used in Japan from ancient times to the Edo period. By the end of the first quarter of the 20th century, Japanese swords (including vikizashi) had evolved from weapons into artistic creations and rare collectibles. They are prized not only for their aesthetics and craftsmanship, but also for their historical significance. In modern culture, vikizashi are sometimes used in traditional ceremonies or as part of historical reenactments.
