Antique sculpture "Girl in gold"
Antique sculpture "Girl in gold". The work is executed in chrysolephantine technique of gilded bronze and bone. Zap. Europe, XX century.
The chrysolephantine technique originated in ancient Greece and was widely used to make iconic statues of deities, such as the famous colossal statues of Athena Parthenos and Olympian Zeus by Phidias. Usually, the flesh and exposed parts of the figure's body were made of carved ivory, and clothing, hair, and other elements were covered with gold or gilded bronze. The technique experienced a renaissance in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, when European sculptors created small, exquisite figurines, often depicting dancers or ladies in exotic outfits.
