Japanese Warrior Boy Doll
A Japanese gift doll of a boy warrior. The figure is dressed in a kimono decorated with a floral pattern. A sword is carried in a sheath on his back. The doll was made by Kyugetsu (久月). The manufacturer was founded in the Edo period. The work is housed in a glass case. Japan, second half of the 20th century.
A doll is a traditional Japanese gift. They are most often given on Girls' Day (March 3rd) and Boys' Day (May 5th). Unlike mass-produced, consumer-grade dolls aimed primarily at foreign tourists, designer dolls range in price from hundreds of dollars to many thousands. They are sold in upscale department stores, as well as in specialty shops in Tokyo's Ningyocho (literally, doll district) near Ginza.
