Sculpture of a young ballerina
Sculpture of a young ballerina. It is made of patinated bronze. It is a replica of Edgar Degas' famous work "The Little Fourteen-year-old Dancer". Europe, XX century.
Edgar Degas (1834-1917), an outstanding representative of the Impressionist movement, never worked with bronze. As the artist's eyesight began to deteriorate, he created chalk or clay figures for himself in his studio. These works coincided with the themes of his paintings - dancers, bathers or galloping horsemen.
None of his sculptures were exhibited by him during his lifetime, with the exception of the work "Little Fourteen-year-old Dancer." The prototype for the job was a real teenager from a poor family, Marie van Getem. When asked to cast copies in bronze, Degas replied: "Leaving something cast in bronze behind is too much responsibility - this material is eternal." The fate of Marie van Goetem is unknown.
