The qilin's appearance is similar to the European unicorn, although it is distinct and resembles a chimera. The qilin is an image of insight, kindness, compassion, and understanding. The qilin's hooves do not trample the grass, but rather press it down as it passes, trampling no insects or harming anyone. This sacred animal, along with the dragon, tortoise, and phoenix, abhors unrest, dirt, and rudeness. Some say that it is possible to see this strange beast in the wild, but it is, of course, so elusive that it only shows itself to a select few, people with pure thoughts.
