Plum blossom in China can be compared in beauty to sakura blossom in Japan: watching the blossoming of this symbol of the coming of spring is a national tradition. Peony, or shayo (Chinese - "the most beautiful"), in the fine arts of China symbolizes well-being and prosperity. Since the Song Dynasty (980-1279), this flower was called the flower of the emperor: it was embroidered on clothes and painted porcelain dishes of the rulers of the Celestial Empire.
