Wood turner Christian Fischer from the Swiss city of Brienz produced animal carvings for sale to tourists. The Black Forest style soon gained popularity and Fischer began to train local craftsmen in this art. The characteristic features of the style are the use of various animals in the plots, especially bears. The objects are also decorated with plants and foliage.

By the beginning of the 20th century, the number of wood carvers in the Black Forest style had grown. Local specialized schools began to appear, one of which even maintained its own zoo with animals for the convenience of the masters and students.
