Paired sculptures "Pho Dogs"
Paired sculptures of "Fo Dogs," or "Fo Lions," made of marble. They depict two mythological animals on pedestals—Fo dogs, also known as Fo Lions, guardian animals of Buddha. The male holds the globe to the ground with his paw and represents Yang energy, power, and success in business. The female, representing Yin energy, protection of home and family, holds a cub to the ground with her paw. Images of Fo dogs were believed to have the ability to ward off evil spirits and all manner of misfortune. Paired Fo dogs are positioned on either side of the entrance to keep evil out. Southeast Asia, 20th century.
