Large antique plate

A large antique plate in the *Nanban* style (depicting European ships). Crafted from porcelain and hand-painted. The center of the plate features a traditional Japanese scene depicting Dutch merchant vessels and Europeans. The handwritten inscription "古赤絵窯" (translating to "Old Akae Kiln") indicates that the porcelain originated from the Arita workshops. The inscription "白龍作" translates to "Made by Hakuryū" (or "Work of Hakuryū"). The term "Hakuryū"—literally meaning "White Dragon"—most likely refers to the name of a workshop in Saga Prefecture (Arita). The red seal "白龍" is the artist's or workshop's personal seal, repeating the name "Hakuryū" found in the handwritten inscription. Japan, Shōwa period, mid-20th century.
